Forest School
Forest School at St John’s
What is Forest School?
Forest School is an inspirational process that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees. (Forest School Association Definition)
How does Forest School work at St John's?
At St John’s, we take each year group of children out into the school grounds and Jolly John’s Farm where there is a fire circle and lots of space to explore the natural environment. There are activities set up for the children to take part in which involve learning how to use tools for sawing, whittling, cutting and drilling. They are also given the opportunity to learn how to build a fire and safely light it, as well as make dens, create pictures models, play games and cook over the fire.Where we can, activities are linked to our Harmony Curriculum, but our over- arching aim is to provide the children with the time and space to lead their own learning, manage risks in a safe, supportive environment and develop a love and respect of the natural world.
